As usual in the Shadowhunter world, the LGBTQ community is well represented. Characters suffer from alcoholism, and their families and friends suffer along with them and confront them too late or so carefully that it has no effect at all. Though societal norms of the early 20th century apply in things like relationships, women in the Shadowhunter world are allowed to be formidable in battle. James' sister Lucie is so blinded by a desire to use her talents and play the savior that she doesn't think about the dangerous company she keeps or consequences of her actions. She wants to be the hero and have adventures but most of the book she feels she's not worthy to be called a hero. Cordelia is brave and clever and the wielder of a powerful weapon that chose her. He's loyal to his friends first, and risks his life for them. James is the leader of his group of friends nicknamed the Merry Thieves because they're always following their instincts and the truth before they follow the law or their parents' wishes.
